  • Chris Amos
    Ypsilanti Area

Chris has worked as a part-time and full-time professional photographer since he was a sophomore in high school (2004). He has specialized in sports, wedding, automotive (editorial & commercial), portrait, and headshot photography. Since mid-2011, Chris has worked (part-time) as the Multimedia Editor at Winding Road Magazine where he is in charge of all video content for the magazine. Chris also is a regular freelance photographer with automotive magazines/websites such as AUTOWEEK, Winding Road, and Autoblog. In early 2012, Chris became inspired by New York headshot photographer Peter Hurley and decided to create and grow a headshot photography business in addition to his work as an automotive photographer. The skills needed in both headshot and automotive photography strike the perfect balance for Chris. Automotive photography/video gives him a venue to enjoy and pursue his passion for cars, while headshots allow Chris to flex his "people skills" and ability to get the best out of those in front of his camera. Background: In May 2011, Chris graduated Albion College with a bachelors in geology and a minor in art. However, halfway through his college career, Chris discovered a passion for business, and realized his calling to continue to grow in his photography after graduation. He would become a full-time professional photographer who just happens to know a lot about rocks. Some of Chris's interests and passions include: entrepreneurship, psychology, mountain biking, grassroots auto racing, ice skating, cars, herpetology, partner dancing, geology, diet & well-being, reading books, watching TED talks on his iPad, the outdoors, talking in a Scottish accent, and oh yeah...photography (of course).

  • Nelson Amos
    Ypsilanti Area

Artistic realism (local images, landscapes, portraits, commissions), artist services (giclées, prints, etc.), custom framing, unique gifts. Nelson Amos's early experience in the visual arts was as an art major at Morehead State University in the 1960's. After a year of study, he decided to follow a career in music which led him to Ohio State University for a Master of Arts degree and The University of Iowa for his Ph.D. Since 1975, he has served as Professor of Music at Eastern Michigan University where he continues to teach classical guitar, lute, and graduate classes in music history. Inspired by his historical music interests, Amos decided in 1997 to incorporate Renaissance and Baroque painting techniques in his art work. In 2004, the Nelson Amos Studio opened at 9 East Cross Street in Ypsilanti's Historic Depot Town. The Studio has since moved to 23 E. Cross Street. To date, Amos has painted almost 40 portraits including individuals, family, as well as corporate commissions. His painted images of Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor are favorite items having broad appeal in Southeast Michigan. Amos continues to teach at Eastern while his wife Korin assumes much of the day-to-day operation of the studio-gallery (custom framing and sales of his original art work).

I call myself an all media artist/teacher, as i tend to go back and forth between medias. Although oils and pastels are my favorite,in the past I have spent a great deal of time as a potter, sculptor, photographer, weaver, and delved to some extent into watercolor and casein. Landscapes are my usual subject, having grown up on a farm where we were free to roam the country side, sometimes gathering wild flowrs, picking wild blackberries, or building playhouses in the woods. After spending several years doing black and white photography, I find digital photography a fascinating subject which I am still investigating. Several years ago I heard John Pappas was going to retire, so took a year of sculpture with him at EMU. I've been a member of the Ann Arbor Women Artists for many years, and more recently a member of the Ann Arbor Area Pastelists. I've received many awards and have had several one person shows of my work. I have a BS in Art, and earned 26 credits toward a masters in painting. My intentions were to get a masters in scultpure but at that time it wasn't offered. My efforts to get a masters was stopped to pursue a business in pot making. I spend 10 years going to art fairs to peddle my wares. Back problems made me go back to painting which I continue to this day. When my husbland retired in '81we bult a two story building, the first level is his shop while the second level is my studio. I have enjoyed being able to spread out in this great space, and work by myself. Early on I did invite other artists to join me, and hired a model. My studio is a great asset where I can show and store my work, or leave works in progress undisturbed until I can return to them. My studio can be found at 4901 Grandview, Ypsilanti, MI, 48197, which is in Pittsfield Township, near the Washtenaw Country Club. My email is . Please call me before you come to visit me at 734-434-2034. I welcome your call.

I am a theatre artist and educator. For many years, I was a one-person theatre department and so became a true theatre generalist. From selling the tickets, marketing the program, directing, designing and building the show and from planning the season to sweeping the floor, I've done it all. My greatest strengths are as a teacher and a director but I am also a quality scenic and lighting designer and technical director. I have directed over 50 productions and designed sets and lights for well over 40 shows. However, it is the quality of the productions I prize rather than the quantity. My design and directing credits feature a wide-ranging repertoire from classical (Much Ado About Nothing, Comedy of Errors, Tartuffe ) to contemporary (Proof, Curse of the Starving Class, Dancing at Lughnasa), comic (Moon Over Buffalo, The Importance of Being Earnest, Rumors) to serious(Eleemosynary, The Investigation, The Runner Stumbles) straight plays (Arms and the Man, The Playboy of the Western World, Lost in Yonkers) to musicals (Kiss Me Kate, The Mikado, The Fantasticks).

    • BFA Columbus College of Art & Design 1962 • BFA Ohio University 1964 • MFA Sculpture, Ohio State University 1966 • University of Michigan Sculpture Studio Coordinator, 1997 - 2007 Woodcarving is a new and extremely stimulating adventure for me. Through it, is essentially my personal exploration of form. The simplicity and honesty of the carving process allows for intense concentration in the reduction of the material into an evolving, expressive structure. Every hit of the mallet, every stroke of the file, alters the wood as it closes in on the finished form within. My images are conceived totally in the round and gradually revealed as I work in a 360-degree fashion. I let the wood guide me to its hidden surprises and discoveries and this makes me eager to see more deeply into the material and try new things. I feel strongly about craftsmanship as evidence of the link between the form, its maker, and the viewer. I want the image to be revealed throughout the form, so that in the finished work there is not a single nub or notch or thread of grain left untouched, underworked or ill-concieved. My goal is a sculpture that achieves an overall sense of completeness. At best I want the work to elicit some emotion and stimulate thought. I want the work to link to its predecessor and beg for its successor.

  • Jean Buescher Bartlett
    Ann Arbor Area

An intrigue with the interplay between pictorial, written and spoken language has led me to print, illustrate, bind and publish limited edition, letterpress printed, as well as one-of-a-kind, handmade books. In many ways they are material investigations into the immaterial. This work is often collaborative, drawing on the expertise of calligraphers, papermakers, photographers, writers, painters and letterpress printers. In each unique book or edition I aim to integrate all of the parts into a resolved whole - from the selection of metal typefaces or hand written text, inks, paper, thread, and book cloth; to erudite and enlightening texts; to sublime and meaningful illustrations; to the physical design of the book structures themselves. Jean Buescher Bartlett teaches Book Arts and The History of Modern Design at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. She maintains a studio and bindery in Ann Arbor's Old West Side. Jean received her MFA in Book Arts from the University of Alabama in 1989. Her work is in over fifty major collections worldwide, including the New York Public Library, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Detroit Public Library, and the University of Michigan Special Collections. She has been making limited edition, letterpress printed, illustrated books under her imprint, Bloodroot Press, producing one-of-a-kind artists' books, and teaching Book Arts workshops across the country for the last twent -five years.

Throughout my life I have always kept sketch books of drawings from observation to improve my skills for capturing reality on paper. I am very confident in my ability to render accurate drawings which also have strong character. Though much of my work deals with decorative shapes and graphic interpretation I am only satisfied when I achieve a high sense of realism in some part of the work. I have been a graphic designer and illustrator since graduating from the University of Michigan in 1979. Most people are familiar with the work I produced as Art Director for the Ann Arbor Summer Festival and the 20 posters I created from 1984 to 2003. Along with my freelance work I am a Lecturer at the School of Art and Design at the University of Michigan. I have been on the faculty continuously since 1993. I am experienced in many media including pen and ink, acrylic, oils, pastel, collage and digital. I am fluent in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I scan all of my artwork and often manipulate it for publication.

I am narrative sculptor creating art that starts a conversation. Primarily interested in making work that exists in all three dimensions, I weave a story to connect it to intangible signifiers in the viewer’s existence. My passion for creating began in childhood growing up in Southwest Detroit. With limited art resources, in my early work I improvised using objects found in my neighborhood. Religious and ethnic themes grow naturally from that past environment. I’ve been an exhibiting artist since 2001. After a career working as an occupational therapist I continue to emerge as an artist. Working with intuitive and outsider artists during my career in mental health provided a creative surge. Today, my sculptural clay and mixed media works grow from personal insights linked to broader issues.

Photography - Landscape and Wildlife Hi I’m Michael Colter, award winning Landscape and Wildlife Photographer living in the Milan area. Working as a Firefighter for 34 years Website - colterphoto.com My passion is photography and I truly enjoy capturing the things that memories are made of, from a chickadee grabbing a sunflower seed to an eagle diving through the air to the river below and catching a fish. Capturing the beauty of the sun rising on the Atlantic to the sun setting in the Pacific and all of the things that we see between. With the warmth of the spring sun that brings life to the trees, flowers and the new life that will walk this Great Earth. Then comes the gentle summer stream and fireflies at night, to the blaze of the autumn tree that are preparing to hibernate through the cold winters nights. These are the thing I love to capture with my camera. One of the things I want to photograph is the Northwest United States, a place that my 4th Great Grandfather John Colter discovered with Lewis and Clark in the Corps of Discovery. After leaving the Corps of Discovery he went on to discover the Yellow Stone area. Some say he was the original Mountain Man. Thanks for looking, Mike

I have always been intrigued with making things, being aware of nature and trying to limit my use of resources on this planet so to reduce global warming. Recycling is a big part of my art. I try to practice what I preach by using found objects in my work. They tell a story of their own, along with adding character to art. When I see a design in my mind I try to shape it into reality. My work is freehand and comfortable. I cut or add to my eyes’ delight. I like curves and flow the pieces into a new use. . I find a new energy from some objects, and creativity takes that "Ah Ha!" step. Some metal can develop a look over time much as a wine’s flavor can grow. I try to blend the look of rust with the shine of grinding. I hammer the surface repeatedly to develop a textured look. My hands seem to know what to do when I cut, hammer and weld metal. Learning to let my heart over rule my conscience is sometimes the hard part.

David Dominic, Jr is a Detroit based photographer/videographer who has traveled the world and been shaped by a variety of experiences in his 39 years of life. As an engineering graduate from the University of Michigan, he brings attention to detail and technical mastery to his work. With fourteen years of project planning and program management in the high pressure field of automotive engineering, David can bring in a quality product on time and on budget. But it takes more than technical skill and planning to make a great photograph. It takes life-shaping experiences for one to be able to step back and observe situations with a different eye. Chess champion, rodeo champion, motor sports racer, musician, writer, camper, climber, adventure racer, husband, and father. All of these things have shaped his life and molded his eye. Whether David is photographing models or children, food and drink, foreign landscapes, or is on the road with a band, he brings honesty, reliability, and creativity to his photographic work. His motion picture work includes documentaries, music videos, and commercial work, where he not only creates the imagery but also directs and produces the shoots. David is also a member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians which helps to bring a unique cultural perspective to his work that most creatives in his field do not possess. In addition to his imaging work, David is currently pursuing his teaching degree at the University of Michigan so that he can pass on to other generations his knowledge and experience.

I am a graphic designer and illustrator as well as a painter; I once thought these endeavors were separate but have realized that they're strongly connected and inform and enrich each other. My design/illustration/editorial work includes award-winning books, brochures, logos for university and business clients; my paintings, available through River Gallery and Splaine Dolan Fine Art, focus on the landscape and are usually oil on linen. I work quite large, usually basing my paintings on small on-site watercolor sketches. I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful area.

Watercolor artist. Ever since I was a child I have enjoyed drawing and painting, and so I've been an artist most of my life. I am a visual person with an interest in people, animals, and nature. Some of my watercolor paintings are a combination of realistic subjects with soft impressionistic backgrounds, while other paintings are a soft realistic style. I have worked with oils and acrylics in the past, and developed some of my style working with those mediums. I became interested in watercolors a few years ago, and found that I really enjoyed working with that medium. I liked their transparency, luminous colors, and the soft look of watercolor paintings. My interest in watercolors has kept me inspired to continue learning, exploring, and growing. I am a member of the Ann Arbor Women's Artists and my watercolor paintings have been exhibited in several local businesses.

Painting is a creative way for me to freeze a special moment in time, to capture an emotion, the beauty of innocence or the passion for something or someone. l am a child at heart and l love to portray in great detail, I am drawn to everyday life, animals/pets and the strength of the human body. Painting can be a challenge, but it is exciting, fulfilling and very rewarding to depict my interpretation using saturated watercolors, incorporating a variety of techniques, like salt, ink, collage or scratching for texture to convey a more improved affect. Painting is a huge part of my life as well as photography. So, it works out great when working on a commissioned painting or on a pet portrait. It is my hope that my art entertains, pleases and ultimately inspires you.

Rooted in ten years of tap dancing as a kid (thanks Mom!), my feet started trembling with excitement when, as a young adult, I first discovered Appalachian clogging and other forms of traditional percussive stepdancing. I knew immediately that this was what I’d been preened for, and have been intimately involved with the traditional music and dance community since the 1980s. I was a founding member of and choregrapher for The Crosstown Cloggers, Crow’s Feet and The Commonwealth Dance Collective, and also spent several years performing as a soloist with a local stringband. My current performance configuration is Matter & Ghost - a collaboration with Michigan’s official state troubadour, Neil Woodward. I am the dance instructor and choreographer for two high school fiddle groups in Washtenaw County, and run ongoing adult clogging classes. Private lessons and special teaching/performance situations are always considered. It took me many years and many miles traveled to find qualified instructors to teach me the art of traditional stepdancing, and am thus extremely dedicated to passing on the material I’ve had the pleasure of learning to any interested folks.

The Songs of the Birds. Inspiration for these paintings comes from listening to birds sing. Bird species have distinct songs and Carol's desire is to recreate their sound in color, rhythm, and time through her stripe compositions. Each painting is of a particular bird researched for color at the University of Michigan’s Museum of Zoology. A composition is later completed while listening to the bird’s sound recording and viewing its sonogram. The paintings are airbrushed for the shimmering, optical effect of each bird's color and song pattern. A few recent exhibitions include: Slocumb Galleries at ETSU juried by Julien Robson, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the AAWA annual District Library Show with a First Place Award, in May, a solo Thesis Exhibition at Eastern Michigan University's Ford Gallery and the Greater Michigan Art Exhibition at Dow Museum of Art and Science at Midland. My personal philosophy is that the art should be fun. I remember walking through a museum with my grandmother and she kept asking me what the meaning of the art was - I could not come up with answers that she liked, which made me really think. I started to notice that I gravitated to art that I thought had vitality. I often could not explain why I liked the art; it was like asking for an explanation of an emotion. So for me, if art is emotion, the emotions that I choose to explore are happiness and exhilaration.

Painting portraits is an exercise in bringing out what is inside...I love doing that and am trying to do the same with other subject matter. My palms get 'itchy' to paint when I see artists' work that conveys psychological truth or makes an emotional statement that wakes me up to an intense experience of the subject. ( Alice Neel's work electrifies me, for instance...and locally, Adrienne Kaplan does that with still life paintings.) That is what I hope for..to be able to do that...wake up a viewer, and experience the waking up as I paint, too. Sometimes I can, and it is thrilling. Other times, not! and it ain't so thrilling.

Thank you for the opportunity to introduce myself.  I have been involved in a number of pursuits and have varied passions and interests.  In the 1990s I was a research librarian at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis for 10 years.  During the latter part of the 90s I got a degree in Sound Engineering and worked for the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre as well as a two year stint as sound designer and board operator at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago.  After a summer spent in Italy, I returned in 2000 to Chicago, to study the Culinary Arts, got a degree from Le Cordon Bleu, and worked as a Chef at the Drake and Peninsula Hotel’s in Chicago. I moved to Ann Arbor in 2006 and worked as a Chef at the Chop House and finally finished my culinary career at Zingerman’s  Roadhouse, when after 2 years there, I hurt my back. I am now a freelance photographer and have taught myself a great deal about photography and the software that allows me to paint in a digital medium.  I have prints available at several shops and have won awards for my work as a digital painter. I am looking for work that will challenge me in several aspects of business as well as to provide me with the opportunity to help others, while honing my own skills in my pursuit of a new career. This will allow me to fulfill my passions and personal responsibilities, both psychologically and financially. I hope u enjoy my work! I welcome all critiques!

I paint "Dreamscapes". My landscape paintings reflect both the inner and outer world. Through my compositions I represent how the reality we experience is both observed and created by us. My goal is for the viewer of my artwork to be able to "escape" into the painting and hopefully be inspired by it. I paint with oils on masonite. I enjoy the smooth surface of wood for rendering fine details. I also create digital images using Photoshop and Bryce. Often I will first create the image digitally and then reproduce it with oil paints. The subjects in my paintings are rendered in a realistic manner but with an overall surrealistic mood. My compositions are non-figurative. I want the viewer of my artwork to experience it first hand as if they were in the scene themselves experiencing it firsthand. I have participated in many local art fairs and shows including the Ann Arbor Summer Arts Fair. Thank you for your interest in my art and please visit my website josephkemeny.com.

I play guitar and dabble in just about anything else I can get my hands on. I've been playing for about 7 years. I'm not very well educated musically. I have a loose understanding of basic music theory but in general just (as admittedly trite as this sounds) play what I feel. Specifically as a guitarist, I'd say my biggest influence is Johnny Marr. I like the parts I write to have a similar intricacy. I love tinkering with chords to find just the right voicing. More broadly as a musician, I'd say my primary influences are Sonic Youth, Radiohead, SIlver Jews, Modest Mouse, Tom Waits, Them Crooked Vultures, and the Black Keys. I'm interested in playing in any sort of experimental rock group.

I grew up in a large family and spent my childhood on the beaches and dunes of Lake Michigan’s eastern shore. The subject matter for my paintings comes from those life experiences. The memories of that childhood propel my many paintings of children playing in the sun, sand and water. In other works I explore the images of people and situations in my adult life. My paintings produce the impression of a specific time and place while the subject matter plays on timeless memories. I create paintings that express energy on many levels; visually, emotionally, intellectually and instinctively. Just as a Michael Jackson music video is a complex combination of music, visual elements, story telling and poetry a painting can have the complex appeal of color, line, composition/design and subject. This union of energies produces an artwork which has a substantial presence in the room. I work in series with all of the paintings relating to each other around a theme. In 2006 I showed a group of paintings which explored the concept of “Personal Bonds.” Each of the paintings was based on a situation in life in which an individual, through contact with another, either broadened their horizons or strengthened their bonds to a group. In the summer of 2007 I exhibited a series of 22 paintings at the Mallet's Creek branch of the Ann Arbor Library entitled “The Children of Summer” which showed the joy that children find in the sun, sand and water at the beaches of Michigan. And, most recently, in April of 2009 I had a solo exhibit of paintings titled “The Games We Play” which compared children’s games with those played by adults.

I have studied many styles of oil painting. I most frequently fall into a subjective tonal impressionist style of painting. I love to paint on location, in plein air, around Michigan and other places in addition to my studio work. Having grown up in a rural environment, I enjoy the simple quiet places in nature. While exploring the forest trails, or driving the country roads, I am reenergized, completely at peace, among the seemingly tranquil existence of nature and the wildlife so fortunate to live there. You will find me in these places, painting what excites me, capturing feelings of a place that can be far more reaching than paint can express.

I am a couturiére, practicing the art of dressmaking. Couture is my reason for being. It is a constant striving with my best efforts reaching toward perfection of my objects and their performance. My work exists at the junction of art and highend ready-to-wear clothes. Like architecture, this art form is lived in. Its effect varies, often changing in appearance over time. It has many dimensions. It is the name of my dreams. A working artist serving clientele for over thirty-five years, I focus on the woman and make each garment, from concept through to finishing. Every life experience is unique and contributes to our personal spirit. Translating the language of dressing the body - fashion - defines my being and discerns the individual in my clients while recognizing our shared humanity. Themed shows in my Ann Arbor studio suggest possibilities. These venues reinforce my belief in the value of meaningful dress, a reasoning of cloth, the body and identity. Sense of Skin - coming Oct. 2010 Things Japanese - Oct. 09 The practice of my craft. I am challenged by Zen cultural readings concerning the concentrated pursuit of art as necessary for ethical learning, a way to be in the world. Origins - Feb. 08 Exploring the influence of the African aesthetic in my life and work: using rhythm, color, materials, to reaffirm life’s spirit, finding beauty in tragic reality, laughter after pain. Still Life: re forming Nature - Oct. 07 Discerning sensuality in the myriad possibilities presented by floral relationships: vibrant color, warm tangibility, organic complexity, edges of darkness and the fleeting quality of joy and exuberance. Birds! - Feb. 07 Inspired by knowledge gleaned through care of my chickens and by the free dream of flight – evidence of levity. Couture: the art of dressmaking, melds my designer aesthetic sense with beautiful materials, intricate technique and interactive process to engage a client’s personality.

I enjoy the relationship between the elements within each painting which can lend a touch of whimsy and a hint of a story that can change with each viewer. My work offers an window into an uncommon world. A world that we as humans may catch glimpses of or sometimes hear or read about but rarely see in detail. My goal is to create a porthole for the viewer to experience nature's awesome and unique beauty. Mankind as a whole feels superior to all other living things. My intention is to help people recognize the importance of all life that we share this planet with. • Tad McKillop
    Ann Arbor Area

Tad McKillop was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1965. He was interested in making art and pretty much all things mechanical since early childhood. In 1985, he began studying figurative sculpture at the University of Michigan and found his passion not only for creating the figure but also the entire casting process. It seemed a natural combination of the two things he loved the most, art and creative problem solving involving tools and construction. Upon graduating in 1988, he apprenticed for Louis Marinaro and continued to learn more about the process and the daily operation of a sculptor's studio. Tad received his MFA in 1992 from the Graduate School of Figurative Art at the New York Academy of Art. Upon graduating he and two business partners opened Daedalus Art Foundry, where he worked until 2000. He then built his own foundry and has continued to expand it, now housed in a 1,800 square foot building and capable of pouring 300 lbs of bronze. Tad has taught sculpture, life drawing and design at the University of Michigan, the University of Toledo, Owens Community College, Washtenaw Community College and Hillsdale College, and continues to pursue teaching part-time. He continues to seek private and public commissions and completed four monumental commissions between 1999 and 2007. In Tad's studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan, there are always many projects in process at any given time. He enjoys modifying and restoring motorcycles, playing guitar, and traveling with his wife Jenny and daughters Maggie and Fiona.

Hello! I make Fairy Doors! These are little doors that you can place around your home to welcome in fairies and other fae folk (who will hopefully bring you good luck.) I make them all by hand out of clay and embellishments. There are other things I do/have tried, but my fairy doors have been the most successful so far. Glassblowing has been another favorite activity, but is quite costly. I have been an arts enthusiast for as long as I have been able to hold a crayon. When I was growing up I found that nothing could make me happier than experiencing or creating art, in all its forms. Now that I have done lots of experimenting with where I want to take my skills, I am (hopefully) ready to get my personal business up and running. A "regular job" can not compare to starting a business of your own when it comes to personal joy and freedom, at least for me, and I hope to get the opportunity to explore my options as a young artist in a competitive economy.

Both the preservation and the degradation of memory are present in my work. Memories are always in a state of metamorphosis. By using materials that are impermanent, I have created work that is also in flux. Each time a viewer engages with the art, a new interpretation results, and a different memory comes to mind. There is a tension between the solid portions of memory and the fading, dissolving portions, created by combining permanent materials with delicate, impermanent parts. Wax preserves a delicate structure, but heat destroys it. Enamel lends strength to thin, pierced silver, but shatters if dropped. This tension between stability and impermanence is important to express how I conceive of memories: they are something that we need in order to understand ourselves, but we also sometimes need to destroy or alter a memory in order to protect ourselves. Nothing can change an event from having occurred, but the construction of memories surrounding an event can be altered, destroyed, improved on, and corrected to suit the needs of the individual at any given time. Although we cannot change our past, we can change the way we understand it.

The simplicity represented in my drawings interrupts a busy world in motion. I feel an instinct to capture thoughts, moments in time, situations and scenes and put them on paper. I most often use permanent marker and watercolor to describe what I see. If my camera is available, I will take a picture and capture the moment more clearly. Hand blown glass, bead jewelry and metal works are other artistic endeavors I've explored. Wherever I go, I document my travels and adventures through writing, and sometimes I make music videos to capture the journey.

Kate is an improvising musician who specializes in woodwinds, primarily saxophone. She collaborates with a number of musicians in the area to produce music that is based largely in "free improvisation," i.e. music created in, by and for the moment of its performance. Kate's background is in classical and jazz saxophone study; she recently graduated from the University of Michigan with a masters degree in Improvisation. While there, she also focused on Creativity and Consciousness studies, which applies the methods and ideologies of contemplative traditions (meditation, for example) to the process of art-making. Kate just released her first CD, Improvised Duets, with guitarist Gary Prince. The album was recorded in Ann Arbor, and features 11 tracks of completely improvised music. Although the concept could be considered somewhat avant garde, the individual songs are tuneful and concise, inviting the listener to contemplate the interaction of the two performers and the sounds they're capable of producing together. Kate is also the Administrative Director of the International Society for Improvised Music, an Ann Arbor-based non-profit dedicated to promoting improvised music and the community of musicians who foster its development. She recently directed their 4th annual conference at UC Santa Cruz.

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with my husband, some cats and a yard full of fashionable birds. I make “ornithologically correct” bird pants. They have a scientific sensibility with a healthy dose of humor. I make about 18 varieties which include robins, hummingbirds, cardinals, chickadees, egrets, finches and buntings. The idea came to me while watching birds at my feeder – they looked so cold in the winter so I made them some pants! Getting them on a bird is a different story…

In 2007 Pam took a bold leap from the corporate tower to begin her journey to find the artist within. In 2008 she was recognized as an “emerging artist” by the South University Art Alliance and invited to participate in the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Subsequently she has exhibited her work in many local venues and with the Michigan Artists’ Gallery in Sutton’s Bay. Pam is a member of Ann Arbor Women Artists and the newest member of Chelsea Painters. Pam finds learning new skills and the creative process exhilarating and life-affirming. • Marian Short
    Ann Arbor Area

Marian Short is a printmaker of ten + years residing in Ann Arbor, MI. Following an introductory woodblock class at the Ann Arbor Art Center, she pursued printmaking independently. Marian’s kind of a foodie and never got over children’s picture books, so both influence her frequently whimsical and off-kilter designs. The woodblocks tend to explore potentially serious subjects with a light touch and often incorporate text to help create partial narratives. She displays and sells prints locally at The Side Door Gallery in Dexter, MI; the CAID, Ann Arbor Art Center and Cake Nouveau have also featured prints. For most of her printmaking career, Marian has carved and hand-pulled all designs in the basement; more recently she was invited to use a good friend’s printing press, which she bogarts at the slightest provocation. When not carving or developing “monitor eyes” at her office, she is likely to be cooking, reading or getting up to other crafty high-jinks.

I have enjoyed wearing many hats, working with all kinds of artists in many different capacities. The most influential step I’ve taken in my career as an artist is with public mural art. After 10 years of developing community mural art programs, in South Eastern Michigan, in the fall of 2007, founded public art business, TreeTown Murals. Tree Town Murals is committed to promoting the visual development of local communities by fostering initiatives that support public art. By enhancing our neighborhoods, city centers, and parks with public artwork, we stand out as a community that makes art a part of our daily lives. I believe mural art should reflect the community it lives in, in addition to encouraging community involvement and economic development.

I'm involved in a number of ongoing projects that seek to: make affordable legal services more widely available to artists and creative organizations, explore alternative business models, use open source and creative commons licensing, and generally give artists more control over their work. In previous lifetimes I've been a hack musician, hack filmmaker, and hack graphic designer.

After years in the advertising world, I am getting back to my first love — painting! My pastels and watercolors have won awards regionally and nationally and I am represented by 3 galleries in Michigan, including the River Gallery in Chelsea. My subjects are often landscapes or "micro landscapes" but I also paint the figure and often do commissioned portraits.

I am a mosaic artist I started making mosaics about 10 years ago in the Caribbean where I decorated my house with mosaics. Soon I was making mosaic tables wall murals etc. for local hotels and guesthouses . Back in Michigan I started Artistica gallery in Dexter with some ladies and soon was asked if I would teach mosaics. The rest is history... I recently moved my studio into the Dexter Arts Center that just opened a few month ago in Dexter. I am very motivated by nature and I usually integrate items I found into my Mosaics.

I consult on a range of topics in art, literacy, and math education, arts and education administration, and nonprofit board development. My relevant experience includes the following: After college, I co-founded Film in the Cities (FITC) and led it from being a storefront, film-education program serving inner-city youth in St. Paul and Minneapolis to becoming the largest media arts center in the U.S. serving artists, students, and educators in a five-state region. The National Endowment for the Arts called FITC a “national leader in media arts education” and “the flagship of the media arts field.” Following mid-career Master’s and Ph.D studies, I facilitated development of a North American studies center at a Polish university, designed online training for piano teachers, and led development of and teacher training in a preschool math curriculum for an educational research foundation. I have extensive experience researching literacy education and coaching teachers in first-grade literacy and math education. I have designed software for teaching expository literacy in primary school. I currently serve on the board of directors and board-development committee of 826michigan, a nonprofit, youth-literacy support organization.

Although I started out in photography shooting concerts as a teenager in the '70s, upon starting college I decided not to pursue it as a career. Nearly 30 years later, I once again took up the camera, but with a much different purpose and more artistic outcome. I'm buoyed by early success in juried exhibits, and excited by the possibilities in merging this artistry with my day job. As a physics professor, teaching and investigating our ever-evolving view of what is real and how we look at it is how I would describe what it is that I actually do. Given that, I like to create images that contain much more beyond the first glance, rewarding the viewer for a more persistent and perceptive gaze. I am currently writing and making images for a textbook I’m calling “Physics for the Right Brain.”

I create a wide variety of colorful and unique hand-painted and etched glassware, designed with fun and functionality in mind! I began painting glass about eight years ago. It started as creating something fun and functional for myself, and slowly progressed into a small business. My clientele has grown from friends and family to now include the public through a variety of arts and craft shows and retail stores and galleries. My audience is growing, and so are my glass creations. In addition to hand-painted glassware, I have also added etched glassware. The hand-painted and etched pieces are safe for food and drink, and most are dishwasher and microwave-safe. Each piece is truly functional for everyday life. In addition I also do acrylic painting, jewelry making, photography and copper enameling. I love trying new mediums and I especially love teaching art to others (kids especially) - I love to see and help others find their creative talent.
