Esther Hurwitz has appeared on public radio, and was once voted “Ms. Under Appreciated” at a regional poetry slam. Her poems have appeared in many places including Exquisite Corpse, The Huron River Review, Ann Arbor (W)rites, Poetry in Performance, and The Recession Nation Project. Soft as a Beagle's Ears is her first collection of poems (www.thewordsmithpress.com). Along with Chris Lord, Esther co-hosts the monthly “Writers Reading at Sweetwaters” poetry series. She is her mother’s favorite poet, but her father favored Shakespeare.

Chris Lord’s poetry has won places in competitions (e.g., Current, Detroit Women Writers, Writer’s Digest) and appeared in many journals. She founded Word’n Woman Press in March of 2007, edited and published the Bear River Writers Respond to War print edition, and the Writers Reading at Sweetwaters anthology. Her chapbook Field Guide to Luck was published by Pudding House Publications in 2007. Currently, Chris is honored to be Editor of the Bear River Review, and co-host of the monthly series, Writers Reading at Sweetwaters. She is teaching her poetry class “Muse of a Woman” for Ann Arbor Rec&Ed this winter. Chris also actively supports women’s rights.

My path is to assist individuals in accessing their creativity and life-vision. To do this, I teach contemplative practice (sitting meditation, tai chi, working with color, etc) and nature-based contemplative practice. I teach a 'Writer and Contemplative Practice' retreat at the GilChrist retreat center as well as a nature & mysticism retreat. I also teach these retreats in Northern Michigan in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. Open to all who want to quest for deep vision with the assistance of the natural world.
